Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame."
~W.H. Auden
I don't mind being partly composed of dust as long as it is the kind just after an early rain that smells like waking up slowly.
I deserve a kick to the ear for immediately picturing smartphone users when reading, "Ironic points of light flash out wherever the Just exchange their messages..."
ReplyDeleteWell not a kick, but perhaps a vehement headshake.
